Góðan daginn,
after staying in the Fosshotel Husavik we decided to visit the Marco Polo recommended whale museum in Hùsavik. From the outside it looks like a big industry hall, but in the inside it is really cute and very informative (good characteristic for a museum).
In the first room you get chocked by seeing a dead whale, which drunk in a fisher net with it's baby :-(
I thought it is the worst thing, but nearly everything they showed was about dead and horrifying things humans did or do to the whales. The narwhale was hunt for it's horn, which was sold as a unicorn horn in former times, and of course, just because it is a horn (long straight and hard) it is supposed to heal from impotence. Stupid stuff....
One of the interesting hunting strategies was the bubble net, produced from the whales. They breathe a bubble cylinder where the fish are stuck in and then they swim from below with their mouth open and catch everything in the inside.
Anyway, the cool stuff was the upper floor. They had skeletons of nearly 10 different whale species.
Nowadays there is still whaling going on in iceland. But most of the population is against whaling. Nearyl 80 % of the meat is consumed by tourists and of course is shipped to Japan.... because it is a speciality over there and the icelandic whale meat is radiation free... or at least freer....
It looked like a dinosaur museum kkkkk
I liked the museum, even because we went whale watching the second time here in the north afterwards. And yes, you can be excited about this trip!
